Tis is the Season where berries are abound. Marcus styled this color story for the magazine Better Homes & Gardens and it's on news stands now! It's always a wonderful experience to shoot with Photographer Kat Teutsch.

We always like working with the dynamic nature of red at SMH, Inc but red historically is associated with the color of blood, it has also historically been associated with sacrifice, danger and courage. In the USA and Europe red is also the color most commonly associated with heat, activity, passion, sexuality, anger, love and joy. In China, India and many other Asian countries it is the color of symbolizing happiness and good fortune, At the holiday's red berries means celebration and used for decoration.

Many of the berries pictured here are of the bittersweet family,  a semi-woody vine  which scrambles over other plants, the berry is poisonous to humans and livestock, kind of ironic that we associate both the dangerous color red and toxic berries with the Holidays but we love them anyway, even if tempted just don't eat them!

Purple was the color worn by Roman magistrates; it became the imperial color worn by the rulers of the Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire and later by Roman Catholic bishops. Similarly in Japan, the color is traditionally associated with the Emperor and aristocracy. For us at Studio Marcus Hay it will always be associated with the late and great singer Prince who sadly passed away earlier this year.

When sourcing for this image Marcus tapped into rich velvets, amethyst crystals and feathers. Purple runs the gamut of tones, Anywhere from a rich deep blue purple to a lilac to a red hued burgundy.

We enjoyed shooting this image for Better Homes & Gardens featured in the November issue and shot once again by the lovely Photographer Kat Teutsch

It’s time to take out the “trailer trash” because there are some really amazing new interpretations of the iconic caravan out there, with not a mullet hairdo or plaid in sight! There’s nothing more American than a road trip and the idea of getting out on the road and letting things sort out, Singer and Actor and ex mullet wearing Jon Bon Jovi said it best when he said “Map out your future-but do it in pencil. The road ahead is a long as you make it. Make it worth the trip” A road trip is a metaphor of life itself so why not create your trip in as much style as possible.

In this current age it’s easy for man to feel a lack of connection with nature, we stay huddled in our bubbles and don’t often take the plunge, A trailer is like a portal to breaking this spell. Brian and Jodi Buzarde who own “Woody” (That is featured here) know what’s it’s like to be forced to burst the bubble, They closed in on their 30’s and were eager to settle down but like many of their generation, neither knew where their fledging careers would take them. So they devised a solution that was unorthodox but practical, and they built a house that could go with them no matter where they ended up.

On HGTV, there are many shows devoted to the idea of a small mobile home, One show we find fascinating at SMH, Inc is “Tiny House, Big Living” It really sparks a sense of wanderlust as you view folks custom designing a tiny home on wheels for their needs. In a world where rental markets are through the roof and the idea of a young couple owning a home is slimmer, perhaps this is the new solution?

For us, the most iconic symbol of the trailer is the classic Airstream who still produce an amazing array of trailers, even custom making models for sale with design focused companies such as Design Within Reach. We drool over the website, it really evokes memories of childhood and the dream of one day owning your own shining (less pink) silver Barbie camper. Trailers represent a dream that for some become a reality, We hope we inspire you to hit the road and think big.

We have sourced a lot of these images from Dwell Magazine. Dwell is one of our official online content partners. You can view Curio (Our online mini magazine) and Studio Marcus Hay our on dwell.com also. In this article designed purely for this blog and the Dwell website. We have suggestions of great things to buy for the trailer from some of our favorite retailers, many of whom are clients and whose products we have used in projects that have proved very successful, We hope you enjoy our shopping guide.

We continue the Williams Sonoma Thanksgiving vibe by sharing with you some more of the evocative images that were created for this years Thanksgiving and Fall catalog. Marcus who styled these shots got to work with some amazing Photographers and Food Stylists once again for the iconic brand.

In his usual graphic style Marcus was able to make these sets of carving and steak knives jump off the page by using a series of wooden boards, stone bowls and slate. The rich and inciting world of Thanksgiving continues working with the amazing Food Stylist Alison Attenborough working on a buffet that would make any host proud.

These images were shot by SF native Erin Kunkel and Australian Sharyn Cairns

For the Holidays and CB2, Marcus travelled to Chicago a few months ago to work with the team at The Crate and Barrel Studios. This project was the gift guide that is interwoven into the regular catalog which has just come out for the Holidays, 2016.

We were working with much smaller sets then normal. Marcus has just returned again from Chicago where he was part of the team once again for Spring, 16 where the sets where at maximum capacity and felt more familiar. Marcus has worked on The Gift Guide a few years back and he knows it takes a different mindset as there are a lot more images on each page and it is important that each spread has a consistent flow in terms of it's individual theme.

These are just a few of the spreads of many that were featured, Look out for the next set next month in the larger book. Jonny Valiant shot these wonderful images and Marcus would like to thank his amazing Assistants Veronica and Carrie for helping him make it all happen.

In this current climate is a well know fact that more folks are working from home, whether you office is a business, a after hours email station or a nook designated for writing checks and paying bills you should always have a well thought out space that meets all these needs for a work station at home.

A home office does not need to be a big ordeal, it can potentially blend in with the environment so an eye can skim across it without pausing on a messy tower of bills and paperwork that never subsides if you plan it properly. It could be a nook under the stairs or even as you will see here a reconverted shipping container.

Here are 6 tips for an efficient home office:

1. Your space should reflect who you are and what you do, don’t be afraid to think out of the box and embrace something beyond your expected office designed furniture, most on the market found in generic stores lacks soul and an attractive silhouette. You have to sit in there most of the day do it should look pretty. Use a small dining table as a desk,

2. Embrace open shelves to get papers and office accessories off the desk, and use vertical file folders on the desk to keep important papers within arm's reach. Do you prefer to stack or file? If you tend to make piles, get a nice basket to tame your mail, notes, and papers. If you prefer a clean desktop, designate a drawer for your important papers.

3. Invest in a great office chair, your back will thank you! An ergonomically correct, comfortable seat is worth every cent.

4. Let the light in! Make sure your office has plenty of light to cut down on eyestrain and headaches. Position the computer monitor so there's no glare from a window or overhead light, and put a small lamp on the desk for task lighting.

5. Display things that inspire. Use a magnetic board or pin board that will promote ideas and allow your eye to gaze and rest from the screen in front of you.

6. Consider a nap area nearby that is not a bed, lying down for 10 minutes is proven to be beneficial, a daybed is perfect for example.

We have sourced a lot of these images from Dwell Magazine. Dwell is one of our official online content partners. You can view Curio our online mini magazine on Dwell also. In this article designed purely for this blog we have suggestions of great things to buy for the office from some of our favorite retailers, many of whom are clients and whose products we have used in projects that have proved very successful, We hope you enjoy our shopping guide.

We were delighted when Better Homes and Gardens Magazine,  with whom we contribute regularly on color related stories and covers asked us to style the October cover which is on newstands currently to celebrate the emergence of Fall and the color/ metal Copper.

Working with the team we created a number of crafts executed by the amazing Andrea Greco, a long time collaborator at Studio Marcus Hay, Inc who spent many hours copper leafing everything from pumpkins to gourds to wooden bowls, even birch sticks!

Marcus spent a great deal of time researching copper props and making sure there was a combination of beautiful older and newer copper items.

We loved having the opportunity to work again with the ever talented Photographer Kat Teutsch and delightful BH&G's Senior Style Editor Eugenia Santiesteban Soto and Creative Director Jennifer Mandara.

Look out for more color inspired pages In BH&G's in the coming months.

A few months ago, Marcus and his team joined Williams Sonoma in New York for the opportunity to style the Fall Open Kitchen section of the catalog. Using just Open Kitchen product mixed in with a lot of pumpkins, gourds and vibrant pink mom’s, Marcus created a world of Friendsgiving in the complex’s café. Quite a large scale space, He needed to create very large floral arrangements and branches to enhance the festive feeling needed.

Havens Kitchen is located in Chelsea/ NYC The Kitchen is a space dedicated to forming communities through the pleasure of cooking and eating. Alison Cayne founded Haven’s Kitchen in 2012 with the goal of advocating for sustainable agricultural systems by teaching people how to cook. Initially a cooking school, the business eventually expanded to include a café, serving fine and approachable food as well as on-site and off-site private event services.

We loved working again with the amazing Photographer John Kernick, Food by the ever so clever George Dolese

Check out the Freindsgiving section on the website and in the catalog.

For the Williams Sonoma Fall Catalog, 2016, Marcus for SMH, Inc was once again in San Francisco to work on iconic spreads for the season. Thanksgiving is around the corner and this year found us in many different locations around the Bay area to shoot the spreads assigned. We got to shoot with a number of different and wonderful Photographers: Sharyn Cairns, Anders Schonnemann and Anson Smart to name a few. It was a great experience to be with new teams and be a part of creating a visual language for the season for Willams Sonoma.

This Fall we embraced feathers, leather string, crafted copper dipped tags, clever and unexpected table setting ideas and seasonal fauna. Taking a more relaxed casual take mixed with more traditional items of product, We were conscious to give the season a more personal approach, less traditional and uptight. We hope you enjoy the results.

Marcus on behalf of SMH, Inc has the pleasure of visiting Chicago a number of times for work a year and is always delighted at new discoveries in that great city. With his I Phone camera and Instagram never far from reach, Marcus loves capturing the essence of a city in his graphic and very particular way.

This trip he played even more attention to the architecture of the city having the opportunity to wander the streets. Chicago CBD revolves around Michigan Avenue, the iconic building ‘s and big stores but it’s really the suburbs that take extra effort to explore. With this in mind Marcus explored much of the northern suburbs visiting a number of flea markets and shopping districts in that area, sourcing vital props for our latest projects.

View more at our Instagram

Here are Marcus’s recommendations:

Hotels

The James Hotel/ Chicago

Marcus stayed here 2 weeks of the trip, A easy to mistake reasonably large hotel that actually feels more boutique, The rooms are modern and clean and the staff very helpful

You sleep with the rattle of the L train in the distance but this location is great. The hotel is very hip with lots of great social areas and very cleverly designed rooms. The views are spectacular.

The Chicago Athletic Club

The whole complex is amazing with this conversion of the traditional Chicago Athletic Club to a buzzing hotel and with over 4 eateries to choose from including an amazing rooftop situation.

 Shops

Scout, Andersonville

This store has an amazing curated collection of decorative items and industrial furniture, brimming with decorators; it’s the place to be inspired.

Sprout and Sprout Home

This plant store is so inspiring with vignettes galore of amazing well curated plants and pots, they even have potting classes for kids. Their new home store directly across the street has amazing wares. They also have a store in Brooklyn/ New York.

Broadway Antique Market

Two stories of dealers with an amazing collection, Lot’s of vintage record dealers currently, great to build up your record collection. Hours of fun!

Restaurants

Avec

The freshest menu in the city, classic minimalist interior, great service.

Duck Duck Goat

An amazing interior and a fun take on a traditional Chinese restaurant with a great selection of cocktails and dishes.

 Eataly/ Chicago

For when you have to be in the city, A bowl of pasta and a glass of chilled white wine are fine friends to have after a long day in the studio.

Here at SMH, Inc we have always been in love with these chairs, They are quite simply beautiful pieces of sculpture in their own right. That was what Harry Bertoia was all about! A sculptor at heart. Bertoia was born in 1915, in the small village of San Lorenzo, Friuli, Italy until age 15. He and his father went to Detroit, USA. Bertoia stayed in Michigan to attend Cass Technical School, a public school with a special program for talented students in arts and sciences. Later, a one-year scholarship to the Art School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts allowed him to study painting and drawing.

Harry Bertoia opened his own metal workshop at Cranbrook where he taught jewelry design and metal work. In 1946 he moved to California to help fellow Cranbrook alumnus Charles Eames develop methods of laminating and bending plywood. His contribution to that process of developing the Eames famous chairs was extremely valuable but often not recognized as well as it should have been. After that period he spent 2 years in San Diego where he worked on a project involving human engineering, This is where he began making metal sculptures after hours.

In 1950, at the invitation of Hans and Florence Knoll of Knoll, Inc. Harry moved to eastern Pennsylvania with his growing family. The Bertoia Diamond chair series was introduced in 1952 by Knoll. Bertoia also designed all the jigs for the production of the items. Harry set up shop in Bally in an old leaky garage building. The chair became part of the “modern” furniture movement of the 1950s. In the span of a couple of years, Bertoia completed several chair designs for Knoll.

In 1960, Harry Bertoia started the exploration of tonal sculptures. The "tonal", or sounding sculpture, is the art that is most often associated with Harry Bertoia. Their sizes vary from a few inches all the way up to 20 plus feet. Harry loved music and spent endless hours experimenting and finding new sounds to incorporate into Sonambient, the auditory and visual environment created by the tonals.

Bertoia spent the next 25 years of his life experimenting with light, sound and volume through sculptures, paintings and architectural installations.

Working on September Catalog's means embracing Fall, acknowledging that little snap of cold in the air, watching the leaves start to crinkle. Fall in America is a very beautiful season and while we shoot most Fall projects in the height of Summer, It's still nice to get your head around a season that is often associated with holidays like Thanksgiving.

SMH, Inc had a number of weeks in San Francisco belting out beautiful images for Williams Sonoma Cooks that can be seen here and will be featured in the following months as we head towards the holidays.

It was so nice to be able to work with some new working relationships, We loved working with Photographers Sharyn Cairns and Erin Kunkel as well as our fave Romulo Yanes

For the latest August catalog for DWR, It was great to see some shots being revisited in their full format as a complete story. Marcus styled these Bantam sofa images for Design Within Reach last year but this is the first time this year that they have been seen all together. What many of you may know already that at SMH, Inc we love to work with a narrative or a back story that adds a layer of personality to a shot. Here after some discussion, we thought it was an opportunity to showcase a fashion forward career minded woman who was daring, sexy and charismatic.

We shot this story in The Hampton’s and spent much time collecting just the right props to help get across the vision we had for the person that may own this room. We like to work this way as it helps us give authenticity to a space and allows the viewer to subconsciously pick up on a theme or mood based on the character being projected. It’s not unlike creating a set for a film or stage, every little detail is so important right down to what coffee table books that person may own or what favorite flowers she may have in her vase.

We hope you can appreciate and register with the character reflected here, It something we aim to do in nearly all our work. These images were shot with the amazing Jim Bastardo that understands this approach more than anyone.

For the August Catalog for Williams Sonoma, Marcus was asked to style these very chic monochromatic spread's. Working with a new Provence black serve ware, he created a butler's pantry style shot using all pieces from the new range which are all hand painted.

Other shots included new kitchen tool accessories and steak knife sets shot with their matching boxes. Staples for the brand.

Working with the very talent Photographer Anson Smart we had a great week including shots to be featured in September's Catalog and the following months. Look out for those!

Peach and Mint can be reminiscent of the 1980's when we had a love affair with that color combo way back then. This Summer in 2016, it looks fresh again! Sherbet tones always seem cool and inviting.

When Marcus was asked to style this months Home/ Color pages for Better Homes & Gardens, He wanted to embrace the stone fruit of summer in the way of peaches and use them within the shoot creating a modern take on a tea party. Using props from Fort StandardMud AustraliaHay Copenhagen and Clay Kat Ceramics he created a very graphic shot with Photographer Kat Teutsch

Look out for next month's color trends also produced by Marcus and the team at SMH, Inc.
