For Garnet Hill, Marcus was asked once again to Art Direct the catalog for High Summer. Working in New Hampshire, we created many wonderful summer sets inspired by the fashion shoot shot in Mexico on the beach.

The sets were intentionally neutral this time to help allow Garnet Hill's prints to really pop and allow for a light and breezy feel, we even created outdoor porch areas to help bring the outside in.

We loved working with super talented Photographer Seth Smoot again and wonderful Prop Stylist's Heather Greene and Carin Scheve

We are looking forward to next Garnet Hill project later this year, look out for that one!

When Marcus recently visited Sydney/ Australia (his old stomping ground) He was delighted when his old friend and work colleague Anne Marie Cummins from Uber Creative asked him to style a shoot for SBS Food, He literally jumped at the chance on route to the airport from NYC, He says: " I grabbed a spare suitcase, went via my prop storage in Manhattan and grabbed a bunch of props including pewter, flatware, napkins and storage jars, It does come almost second nature to do that these days, but it did feel strange taking a whole suitcase of jangling pewter all the way to Australia, a 22 hour flight, he smiles"

Often when asked to do jobs, it can be a spontaneous thing and you have to rise to the occasion without hesitation. In this instance Marcus also was also plating and styling the food on the shoot, A wiz in the kitchen, Marcus adapted to the new role quite easily but "In the USA, we are used to a Food Stylist being sole responsible for that layer, It made me realize how things work differently in different countries and that I had not worked in Australia in over 10 years so the culture on shoots is quite different, I loved taking on that role and being part of the bigger picture"

"It was a great experience and wonderful to work with wonderful Brett Stevens, The Photographer again and also Anne Marie, a dear friend and great Art Director" Marcus also got to check out Sydney Prop Houses, www.propco-op.com and www.majorandtom.com.au which are great places to visit.

These are part of a series of images that will be featured in the coming months, These first two images are part of a honey inspired series. Look out for more in the future.

This Pre-Fall for CB2, Marcus made the journey to Chicago for a few weeks to work on the latest catalog that is out now. It’s hard to believe but all these amazing rooms were created in the studio from scratch working with the amazing set builders using a lot of reclaimed pieces found in salvage yards and shops around Chicago.

The focus this season revolved around a number of themes including West Coast Casual, Vintage Italian Modern, Gentleman’s Quarters and Luxe Minimalism.  These were perfect themes for Marcus, He says: “ Italian Gio Ponti is one of my favorite masters of design so I was super excited with the theme Vintage Italian Modern, I couldn’t help but reference him and draw inspiration from his approach to design”

CB2 have a wonderful collection of new pieces of furniture and decorative pieces so it was a real pleasure to be able to work with these silhouettes”

For the latest issue of Better Homes and Gardens Magazine, Marcus for SMH, Inc was asked to produce a color trends story with the color Yellow.

As most of you would know we love a color trends story and yellow is a particular favorite, Yellow is often reminiscent of the 1960's where some the inspiration for the propping came from for this image using some items actually sourced from that era including some of the yellow plastic molded trays and ceramic dishes. It was the era of "Mellow Yellow" but in our eyes, mellow is hardly a word you would call yellow, When Donavan sang "They call me Mellow Yellow" in 1966, It was rumoured he was singing about smoking dried banana leaves, Maybe it was just a color that had popularity in the 1960's as soon after in the same year the Beatles released "Yellow Submarine" with Donavan's help, he was obviously into the color!

It's so much fun to create these stories most months for Better Homes and Gardens and to work once again with the delightful Photographer Kat Teutsch.

For Williams Sonoma Summer, It’s always nice to shoot it where it’s warmer all year anyhow to get into the spirit of sunshine and happy days, Escaping the dead of winter in NY for the more palatable west coast allowed SMH, Inc to work on some great images for the new catalog featuring a very appetizing cocktail on the cover was a pleasure.

This time we were focused on Styling, Continuing with their melamine collection, we have some more versions of that series profiled here, taking a very graphic approach on a lovely zinc surface. Wedding registries and baking pages galore and a fun lemonade party where we worked with two delightful girls, creating a garden, lemonade stand and wardrobe. Was a lot of fun for American Girl. You can’t see it, but there is some very lovely 10 x 10 feet sod beneath their feet the best quality California has to offer!

These images ended up in the main catalog but also in a mini Gift catalog also.

Was great to work once again with the very talented Photographer's, Anson Smart and Romulo Yanes

For Garnet Hill back in January, We had a lovely day shooting cover tries for Garnet Hill with Stylist Helen Crowther and Photographer Seth Smoot. We had just come off shooting summer for Garnet Hill and Marcus was asked to Art Direct these cover tries for the season. With a new spirit in mind and a fresh heart we wanted to explore new themes for Garnet Hill.

We love their wire Biscayne chair and wanted to profile it in a range of shots embracing their silhouette and the beautiful shadows they create.  We also explored popsicles, shells, paint palettes, coconuts, cocktails, flippers and surfboards, All the best summer can offer!

We have combined them with some of the main shots we did for Garnet Hill so you can see the connection, We hope they will use these covers in the future as we had a great time producing them.

What would life be without music? A very dull place indeed! Music really does provide the soundtrack to our lives and there are pivotal artists, songs and albums that resonate with each and all of us at certain times in our lives. Think of all the moments we have all had, where without those attachments to music we wouldn’t have the magic of hearing a song out of the blue that takes you back to a special place, nothing beats that!

It’s not only the music itself but the images that have been produced that are connected to a certain performer we admire, French graphic designer, illustrator, photographer and advertising film director Jean Paul Goude’s association with Grace Jone’s image is iconic and formed her visually as an artist, As did Andy Warhol. Madonna’s working relationship with Photographer’s Herb Ritts and Steven Meisel to name a couple produced cover images we will never forget. Photographer Richard Avedon and Audrey Hepburn, Artist Keith Haring and Sylvester…the list goes on.

Here at SMH, Inc we have a fascination with LP’s and Marcus’s vinyl collection grows by the day. So many amazing cover art has been produced over the years and with our passion for Graphic Design, Photography and Illustration, It’s only natural we gravitate towards these covers which ironically are exactly the right square format to sit nicely in an Instagram post. Hence we have been able to share rather than keeping our LP’s stacked away in the cupboard and through Instagram we feature some of our personal favorite’s in a section we call What’s on my turntable.

Here are a few above, Look out for more as the collection expands.

Left: Sketch, Right Aldo Rossi in his office, 1980’s

When you look at Aldo Rossi’s work, His product design through to his architecture, you see a passion for heritage but a nod to the future that is distinctly his own. Born in Milan (1931-1997), he is considered by many to be the greatest Italian architect of the second half of the 20th century. His notoriety comes from the fact that it was he who accomplished the unusual feat of achieving international recognition in four distinct areas: theory, drawing, architecture and product design

His espresso maker La Cupola, designed for Alessi came out in 1988 and is what drew us to really notice his work, Having needed a espresso maker on our travels, we discovered this classic coffee pot and was inspired by it’s dome like lid and whimsical nature at Chicago’s Eataly. It was from there we felt the need to explore further work and what we unearthed was a body of work, which is breathtaking. In particular his sketches for his projects are artworks in themselves and really capture a spirit and dynamism that is mirrored in the final product.

The amazing thing about his work is that even though he seemed to be pigeon holed a post modernist, he truly was his own entity. He once said, "I cannot be Postmodern, as I have never been Modern," His body of work is enormous but buildings worth mentioning that are worth checking out are San Cataldo Cemetery, Monte Amiata Housing, Teatro Carlo Felice, Teatro La Fenice, Bonnefantenmuseum and The Gallaratese Housing, Milan. To go in depth about these would require a much more involved post, if interested read more about them here.

When Rossi was awarded the Pritzer Prize in 1990, the jury said: "Rossi has been able to follow the lessons of classical architecture without copying them; his buildings carry echoes from the past in their use of forms that have a universal, haunting quality."

"His work is at once bold and ordinary, original without being novel, refreshingly simple in appearance but extremely complex in content and meaning," they added. "In a period of diverse styles and influences, Aldo Rossi has eschewed the fashionable and popular to create an architecture singularly his own."

He sadly died in an automobile accident in 1997 at the age of 66

Neutral palettes are a favorite in many design circles, a minimalist’s dream come true is an all white room, and there have been many parodies in this, including my favorite in the TV show Absolutely Fabulous where Patsy and Eddie make the terrifying mistake of bringing a bottle of red wine to their all white minimalist friends house only to leave it outside the door in fear it will be a glaringly obvious faux par.

As most designers know, white comes in a million shades and while we consider it an obvious choice for a clean look, you have to pick your whites carefully. A warm creamy white feels totally different to a crisp clinical one and will give you a completely different look or feel.

Whites in nature inspire, the white of an egg, the crisp blanket of snow that can cover a city overnight. The bark of birch tree and a glass of frothy milk. More often than not, Architects and Interior Designers embrace white as a color of choice, it feels harmonious and reflects light in the most beautiful way.

At Studio Marcus Hay, We love working with white, In a world often saturated with an overload of color options, white offers a sophisticated platform in which to create, It’s painterly quality and neutrality means concentrating on composition rather than worrying about the clash of using multiple colors.

Pinterest is also a Stylist’s and Art Director’s new best friend, these images are from my folders you can check out. These layouts were created for the sole purpose of this blog only, all images are credited where possible, Let us know if it’s not the case and we can amend. We aim to highlight all the amazing work done by so many fellow people using flowers as their medium and inspiration. Thank you for bringing refreshing neutrality into our lives!

On a recent trip back to the motherland, Marcus enjoyed a month sinking back into the Australian way after more than 10 years living away from this great city down under.

Here is his account:

The first thing that strikes you when finally clear the airport is that that light is bright, Sydney has the type of light that could blind you it’s so brilliant. Everything seems so, so blue and there is a reason why blue features heavily in most decorating palettes in the city, it’s everywhere. The sky on a good day is so crisp but on a stormy or cloudy day, the clouds billow and float above you with the imminent possibility of a downpour at any minute.

Perhaps the people of Sydney’s temperament is not unlike the weather, Clear and sparkly one minute but can become dark and stormy the next. There is a raw energy and a sense of wild abandonment you can feel in general in Sydney with it’s folks, however recent lock down laws have forced people to reconsider their wilder side usually spurred on by a chardonnay too many.

I like this slightly brutal side of Sydney, It’s unashamed in it’s raw beauty, buildings are monumental and graphic, dig deep and you will find amazing nods to modernist roots with ceramic murals and art deco wonders all around the city.

Venture onto the beaches and nature will hit you in the face, open rock pools, breathtaking views of waterways and coasts. Graphic seaweed and cute waterside eateries will have you eating 4 courses and 2 bottles of wine before the afternoon is out, Sydney is that type of place.

Shopping will delight with many designers and stylists opening stores particularly around the inner west, which is blossoming. The inner CBD has killer shopping complex’s that sparkle with modern intensity, I prefer the charm of The Strand Arcade however that has been there for over 120 years.

Make sure you head to the AGNSW and to discover Australian art, old and new.

Better Homes & Gardens/ Spring Color Trends/ Whisper Whites

Working on a new image for magazine Better Homes and Gardens with Photographer Kat Teutsch is always a pleasure and here at Studio Marcus Hay, Inc really speaks to our love of color trends and theory.

Whisper Whites was this months theme and we were excited to use almost non color this time after so many months of using bright color palettes. It's always a favorite and feels so serene and classic. With just a hint of pink or blue for instance we paired many textures including porcelain, ceramics by Elephant Ceramics, limestone, travertine, marble and satin ribbon.

Evoking classical themes, we wanted it to have a Spring feel, hence the use of blooms including peony roses, tulips, carnations and runucculas. We also sourced fossils and crystal to give it a link to the natural world.

Look out for our next color story for the magazine out soon.

For the May mini catalog for Design With Reach, Studio Marcus Hay, Inc was delighted to see some "locked in the bank" images emerge that have been shot on previous shoots and have been saved for this special catalog.

Also other images and new crops can be seen on the site itself of the George Nelson series we shot recently plus other details, As much work goes into these shots as any other so we love to see them featured, These includes photography we produced ourselves at the studio for the shoot in the way of art seen on the walls which we specially framed.

Studio Marcus Hay, Inc is about to embark on another project for DWR next week, we look forward to working with the team again including Jim Bastardo, whose work is featured here.

Forget about that furry variety of friend, on a photo shoot, flowers are a Stylist and Art Director’s best friends. So many times when setting up a shot, everything can look amazing but it is that last punctuation of including something living in the shot that unlocks the key and confirms as human’s how we subconsciously respond to organics and more than often not, it makes the shot come alive literally in front of you like magic.

I also can’t count the number of times when transiting back from the flower markets on the subway, how a usually checked out of life, fellow commuter’s eyes light can up with sudden joy, at the peek of a beautiful spring blossom pushing it’s way through the brown paper. In my job I am constantly carrying around bundles of living joy, for me, it’s my cute baby or sweet puppy; they can’t help but get a reaction! Flowers have an immediate pull of emotion that encourages random opportunities for communication and thus they represent so much more than we give them acknowledgement for.

People can get very, very personal about flowers also, I will never forget on a certain shoot some years back with a particular Photographer whose bent and passion was with flowers to a fanatical extent, having to watch from the sidelines them throwing down on the floor in a heap my artfully arranged flower compositions with disgust and rearranging them themselves. Needless to say being just as spirited about organics myself, I have never really gotten over that moment but it made me realize how riled up and what a personal reaction flowers can have. The comment Madonna made years ago about hating Hydrangeas given to her by a fan that got her into a lot of trouble surprised me, how can someone hate a flower?

When someone on set turns up his or her nose at a certain variety I always think it’s telling. The truth is often flowers will remind us of certain events in our life. Sometimes to be honest a certain flower can seemed dated, like for me, a poor gerbera daisy will always remind me of the 1990’s and VW bugs with test tube vases and I just can’t use them but then sometimes I will surprise myself and when a flower can be presented in an unexpected way, with the right setting you can begin see it’s beauty in a whole different light. Sometimes I make it my personal mission to try and bring back an unfairly deemed unfashionable variety of flower, for instance when you take baby’s breath out of a 1980’s inspired corsage and by itself, it’s actually quite a beautiful thing, It’s by association with being combined with another variety, it got in trouble in the first place.

When someone on set twitches and almost dry heaves at the sight of a certain variety, , you really wonder what the story is? One thing is for certain there is always a certain trepidation involved as a Stylist when bringing flowers onto a set, that it is possible that one of the key players on set may have some back story that you could have never had guessed and the day could be doomed from the early unwrapping of the flowers because you did not know for instance that you unlocked a hidden fear brought on by the scent of lilies. The reality is you could never know what could have made them run out of the room in a flushed and sweaty state, but flowers will bring out all sorts of emotions and that’s why there is power in that flower! …Boom it can knock you out!

Thank you for bringing beauty into our lives!

Late last year, Marcus of SMH, Inc was asked to join the Garnet Hill team in New Hampshire to be lead Art Director over 2 teams. Marcus has Art Directed for them before but this was the first time as lead. An incredible amount of work goes into the planning of these catalogs and what you see here is just a taste, having shot enough shots to cover 3 or 4 drops over the Spring and Summer seasons. It was a very exciting project .

Marcus spent almost an entire creative week In New York at the studio before heading up to New Hampshire, planning the approach the 2 teams would take to over 50 different looks giving each Garnet Hill design it’s own distinct look based on the look or feel of each design. Working closely with the talented merchants and designers of the product, Marcus had a series of meetings where he presented his ideas and worked through the merchandising of the product in each shot. Every little detail is planned out, right down to what style of bed, lamp and rugs will be used in combination for each shot.

Working with the talented set builder Casey Maroon from Maroon Design Works we created a number of amazing configurations of sets that would work over the two teams.

It literally takes an army to create these catalogs and while Marcus was working directly with a more nuclear team on the week of the shoot, Marcus was also overseeing the other team lead by Art Director Katrine Hansen who did an wonderful job and was such a pleasure to work with.

The shots above are the shots Marcus directed, some of these are preview images only featured online at www.garnethill.com currently in their favorite spaces section but we will feature them again in their full crops later down the track as they are emerge in the actual catalog.

Look out for these soon.

The images above are shot by one of our favorite Photographer's Seth Smoot, We were excited to work again with magical Stylist's Carin Scheve (Props) and Eduardo Vinueza (Soft Styling)

In 2008, In the Sam Mendes film Revolutionary Road starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, which was beautifully Art Directed by Debra Schutt and Kristi Zea I will always remember a Baca vase by designer Nils Thorsson that sat in the Living room of their 1950’s house. For me it really stood out, as I had always loved these vases. As a Stylist and Art Director myself, It’s funny the things you remember. Today I am lucky to own quite a few Nils Thorsson pieces, many that I picked up in flea markets in Denmark. I love their unique silhouettes and highly personalized styling.

Nils Thorsson (1898 - 1975) was a Swedish/ Danish ceramic artist and designer for Royal Copenhagen. Nils joined Royal Copenhagen as an apprentice in 1912, and graduated from the royal Danish Academy in 1917. He went on to become Royal Copenhagen’s most prolific designer. He was Artistic director at Royal Copenhagen from 1949 while also artistic director of Alumina also from 1928-1969

He designed at least four of their best-known production ranges – Solberg (1930’s), Marselis (Alumina 1950’s) Tenera (1960’s) and Baca (1960/70’s)

Nils extensive career produced so much work it is very difficult to highlight it all, he changed courses many times during the decades at Royal Copenhagen and his work reflects the fashions of each era beautifully. His pieces from the 1950s to the 1970’s, especially from the Baca and Tenera ranges, were and remain some of Royal Copenhagen’s most popular works coveted as being prime examples of mid-century modernism.

Nils’s motifs and designs ranged from the naturalistic to abstract to geometric designs often embracing regular motifs such as birds, fish and butterflies.

I hope you all enjoy this article and are inspired to celebrate this amazing career. These layouts are designed by SMH, Inc for our blog only. All images are credited where possible.

For the March issue of the Design Within Reach catalog, Studio Marcus Hay, Inc was thrilled to see some past shots used again in the mini catalog, In particular the amazing shot by Photographer Jim Bastardo of the Arne Jacobsen egg chair used on the cover, one of our favourite shots from that series we shot in a Chelsea Architectural office.
