In November last year, Marcus travelled back to San Francisco to work with The Pottery Barn Team on their April Catalog.

Recently Pottery Barn has included some exciting Pottery Barn makeovers in their catalogs, giving people the opportunity see their living spaces in a whole new light using Pottery Barn product to makeover one of their living spaces. Marcus was assigned the project of working with a lovely couple Sterling and Cassie on their cottage in Hayward, San Francisco. Sterling and Cassie have two adorable daughters and due having such a busy time with young kids they often don't have a lot of time to decorate. Marcus spent some time working on a plan as seen on the pages above using product available in the current catalog. Repainting the space from a dirty yellow to fresh white and a duck egg blue freshened the place straight away. Marcus also created a gallery of art including photo's of the family selected by marcus and Cassie for the space, It was a big transformation that took many weeks in the planning but everybody was very happy with the end results.

On the same week, Marcus also shot some outdoor shots in an amazing property in Marin and helped create the look for the impending Summer which always comes earlier in California! A fun week had by all, It was great t work with talented Photographer John Merkl and Art Director Yu Me Compton.

Started in 2009 with a close friend, Tulya Madra started her ceramic business in a small town on the Aegean Coast in Turkey, back and forth over the years, she now resides in New York and has expanded her creative and ceramic world to Soho, New York where the cutest store on Thompson Street houses her designs and a small studio at the rear of the store where new ideas are born.

Santimetre means Centimeter in Turkish, A centimeter is approximately the width of the fingernail of an average adult person, Internationally the centimeter remains a practical unit of length for many everyday measurements, Like the centimeter, Tulya likes to keep the business small and precise but strongly independent and focused.

Many of Tulya’s designs are based on her personal experiences and stories growing up in Turkey, In her shared family home where collected ceramics from many different sides of the family migrated and were housed, she remembers as a child fondly the silhouette’s of these much used collated pieces from all different era’s and then through her process of design she illuminates them in her adult life into new shapes and forms. Taking this detour through the past and choosing reminiscent forms as the sources for inspiration means Tulya embraces the culture deeply rooted in geography and social landscapes. Her experience in both interior and furniture design are also big influences and a layer seen obviously in her work. Color plays a big part and you can see from the Studio's work that they are color technicians, amazing glazes so rich and deep with life echoing the Aegean surroundings.

Tulya and her team are focused on making thoughtful, enduring and graceful pieces that enhance the quality of the lives that use them. They design, model, mould, cast, fettle, glaze and kiln their own collections. Apart from their porcelain practices, They also produce other goods made with materials Tulya love’s like textiles, leather, cement, iron and wood.

Here we ask Tulya a few questions:

Q: Where exactly did you grow up?

A: I grew up partially in Istanbul and this Aegean coastal town "Ayvalik" which is my father’s hometown.

Q: What was your education and background leading up to your current career?

A:  I went to an American high school in Istanbul. I studied philosophy at Bogazici university for two years. then I switched to industrial design at the fine arts academy in Istanbul. Later on when I moved to New York in 1996 I continued studying philosophy at New School. I never practiced as an Industrial Designer but after school I chose to become a furniture designer. I also worked for interior design projects and always custom designed the furniture I used for these projects.

Q: What were you major influences as a child growing up in Turkey and how did this influence your design practice and approach?

A: My parents were always very interested in art and their circle of friends were a lot of Turkish and international artists. My father was into abstract photography and my mother eventually became a curator so I grew up in a very lucky environment where I was exposed to a lot of creativity. My father was an avid "Domus" reader. I still have this incredible Domus Magazine collection dating back to early sixties. As a child I used to spend hours looking at the pictures of these magazines and dream about trying to understand what is going on in the spaced depicted.

Q: Where is the workshop and store located in Turkey?

A: After spending an eight year period in New York I moved back to Turkey in 2003. I could not re-adjust to Istanbul and decided to move to my favorite childhood town Ayvalik. There I established an architectural and design office with an architect friend Firat Aykac. With Firat I started experimenting with clay and eventually set up a small casting studio. We named it Santimetre which means centimeter in Turkish. That small workshop eventually grew into what it is now. it is located in the town center and annexed to it is its store. Firat is no longer an active part of the team but still keeps an eye on us. We trained ourselves and today the main production is the work of myself and 4/5 other members.

Q: Who are your favorite designers and influencers?

A: I appreciate so many good designers and artists it’s hard to name a few. But I do have personal super favorites of course. Tony Smith, Jannis Kounellis, George Hadjimichalis and William Kentridge are my artistic heroes. Konstantin Gricic is the ultimate designer for me, I also love Patricia Urquiola's sensibility and historically I am a big fan of Carlo Scarpa.

Q: How would you describe your personal style?

A: I like stories, I like wandering with connotations, I like poetry and nature, I don't see myself having a definitive style, I have too many conflicting interests for example I admire minimalism but I can never be a minimalist myself. Maybe I would say that my style is the way I move fluidly around my personal interests.

Q: Did you take a different approach to your business when expanding to the USA?

A: Well my new adventure in New York is shaping my project in new ways of course, but I didn't arrive with a big new plan, I just brought what I have been doing in the past here to New York. Being in New York is a great chance for more visibility, but as the name suggests I will try to keep my studio at its independent, experimental and on a low batch / highly analogue scale.

Check out the store at 105 Thompson Street, New York, NY, 10012, Ph: 646 508 8756 and the website at Santimetre Studio

For the February Catalog, Design Within Reach has put out an amazing catalog featuring portraits of some of the designers whose designs they carry. Marcus had styled some of these interior only shots in each spread featuring their work over the course of a year or two for the Connecticut based company.

Often on a shoot, Photographer Jim Bastardo will see different angles and details we can shoot on each of the products and by simply changing this viewpoint we have a selection of brand new shots, often these shots are in the vault until the opportunity arises such as this to feature them, It’s always a wonderful thing to see!

It’s great that a company will strive to show the face behind modern design and lively black and white shots capture that celebration and achievement.

It all happens in Chicago!, Marcus worked once again with Photographer Jonny Valiant for CB2 in the Crate & Barrel Studios for the next addition of the Spring, 17 book just out. This is the second Spring addition which features some new spreads.

We continued our take on  Modern Italian and Californian inspired stories. Here we have a couple of new bedrooms, Marcus has spent many years working with beds and there's some major tricks that go into making a bed look great, there's always a fine line between lived in and just plain messy, For CB2 we like to style them more on the simpler side. The first bedroom was made to feel like a Fashionista's hotel room and the second a Gentleman's Quarter so a slightly different approach was taken on both to give a point of difference.

Marcus worked with creating the sets with set builder and designer Justin Rowe and Art Director Jennifer Moore working with may marble surfaces and metallic detailing. Thanks to my wonderful Chicago based Assistants Veronica Sullivan and Amanda Wolfson

We hope you enjoy these new spreads for CB2 Spring, 17.

I’ve been to Marfa too! It would be a common cry amongst design savvy seekers, for some would argue that Marfa is now the design hub of Texas. A tiny dusty town on the west side of the Texas border, It’s well worth the trek and if you love design, it’s a must see. Many have made the pilgrimage and judging from all the minimalist hipster influences, it’s definitely happened!

Joining a tribe of fellow art lovers, Marcus from SMH, Inc made the journey on an extensive road trip that started in New Orleans and ended in Austin, driving across Texas state from East to West, Many aspects of that trip will be featured in other future posts but due to the broad coverage of many exciting places, for now we have settled on Marfa for this post.

In the 1950’s, Marfa was better known for it’s Marfa Ghost Lights, seen on Route 67, Many thought they were ghosts or UFO’s. In the 1970’s Artist Donald Judd moved in and it all changed, After renting summer houses for a couple of years, Donald bought two large hangars and some smaller buildings and began to permanently install his art. While this started with his building in New York, the buildings in Marfa allowed him to install his works on a larger scale. In 1976, he bought the first of two ranches that would become his primary places of residence, continuing a long love affair with the desert landscape surrounding Marfa. Later, with assistance from the Dia Art Foundation in New York, Judd acquired decommissioned Fort D.A. Russell, and began transforming the fort's buildings into art spaces in 1979. Judd's vision was to house large collections of individual artists' work on permanent display, as a sort of anti-museum.

Since Judd's death in 1994, two foundations have worked to maintain his legacy: the Chinati Foundation and Judd Foundation. The Chinati Foundation now occupies more than 10 buildings at the site and has on permanent exhibit work by artists such as Dan Flavin, and Claes Oldenburg. The Chinati and Judd Foundation’s are just amazing to visit and it is recommended you spend just two days exploring these, for those less museum inclined there is still plenty to do with great hotel’s, restaurants and shops to explore although you do have to be ready to seek many of them out as Marfa is not set up in an “obvious” way with many of these places hard to find and hard to get into during busy periods.

Top 5 top things to do in Marfa:

-        Hang out at The Hotel St George which is a hub of activity and houses a great bookstore, bar and restaurant, even better to stay there and it’s all at your fingertips.

-        Visit all the Donald Judd available tours, too much Judd is never enough!

-        Try the food! Food Shark is very popular and a lot of fun but be prepared to line up, Cochineal is very hard to get into but has a great outdoor area, Bun’s and Roses for breakfast and Stellina which is also well worth the wait. Many places don’t take booking’s so get there early!

-        Go to Wrong Gallery for amazing work to buy from local artists, visit their site for opening hour details

-        Walk around the backstreets and have your camera handy, there are so many photo opportunities and the landscape is breathtaking

In Chicago, Marcus worked once again with the ever talented Jonny Valiant for CB2 in the Crate & Barrel Studios for the Spring, 17 book just out.

It was exciting to work with many new products new to the season and seen for the first time. We shot the book in many themes including Modern Italian and Californian inspired stories. Many bedrooms and living rooms but also a coffee shop in the mix that used a very exciting 3D herringbone wall.

Marcus worked with creating the sets with set builder and designer Justin Rowe and Art Director Jennifer Moore working with may marble surfaces and metallic detailing. All finishes were created by Alexis Gourguechon including the marble surfboard that features on some of the spreads, Alexis is a master at the faux finish and very talented. Thanks to my amazing Assistants Veronica Sullivan and Amanda Wolfson

We hope you enjoy the spreads for CB2 Spring, 17.

For Spring, 2017, Williams Sonoma Home has embraced a pastel palette and introduced some softer colors to their palette in the way of dusty pinks, aquas and yellows. In the mix are also the classics blues and grays.

Marcus was asked to join the team in San Francisco to style these pages with Photographer Eric Piasecki that Marcus has worked with many times before, It was great to reunite!

We had a lot of decorative pillow spreads to shoot and it was lot's of fun to come up with props that helped tell the story behind each scheme.

For the Holiday's, 2016, Marcus was asked to join the team in Chicago to shoot the very extensive Holiday Gift Guide that comes out each year for CB2. Spanning over a couple of weeks, the team shot over 55 images for the book in different themes such as The Bar, The Garden, For Her, For Him, The Host etc

It was great to work with such interesting graphic and contemporary gift ideas, many of which we are adding to our list for these holidays. Marcus especially loved styling the spread for The Garden finding amazing succulents and plants at Sprout Home, one of his favorite Chicago stores.

He also used hand crafted silver, gold and copper leafed gift tags throughout especially made and designed for the shoot by his team. Marcus got to work with the amazing as ever Photographer Jonny Valiant

Earlier this year Marcus spent a wonderful day with Photographer Brett Stevens, Art Director Anne Marie Cummins of Food to Film and Food Prep Extraordinaire Angela Devlin in his old home town of Sydney. It had been over 10 years since Marcus shot anything in Australia so it was quite the treat to be able to experience the industry there all over again. Marcus and Anne Marie spent time planning the shoot by visiting some great prop houses and shops to add to Marcus's props he brought from New York to create these images.

You can view these at SBS Food under the banner of "Scream for Icecream" The copy reads: From summer fruit to rich chocolate, from simple scoops to decorated cups – there are many reasons to scream for ice-cream. Satisfy your sweet tooth today.

In Australia, Australians celebrate Christmas in the middle of summer so it's perfectly natural to want to explore icecream recipes this time of the year but let's face it icecream is great in any country or climate at any time of the year!

It was such a honor for Marcus to be asked by Williams Sonoma to contribute to their Taste blog in an article "How to set a Holiday table like a Stylist"

This copy accompanied Marcus's image plus many more great images by Marcus's fellow Stylist friends and workmates: A creatively set holiday table does more than provide great Instagram fodder for you and guests – it can set the mood for the entire party, start a conversations between guests, and let you share a bit of your personal style with everyone at the table.

For inspiration, we turned to a dream team of Williams-Sonoma stylists, who make it their job to set beautiful tablescapes for photo shoots and parties. From clever DIYs to nature-inspired centerpieces, here are some of their best ideas for setting a striking holiday table.

We created our table using the Open Kitchen range, Not with the food, necessarily, but with the décor: A twig or branch tucked into a napkin ring, a bundle of fresh herbs to freshen each place setting, or a homemade “runner” of everygreen foliage will do the trick. “It can feel freshly plucked from the garden and really natural, in addition to adding a fresh fragrance,” says Marcus

The image was photographed by the wonderful Romulo Yanes

Tis is the Season where berries are abound. Marcus styled this color story for the magazine Better Homes & Gardens and it's on news stands now! It's always a wonderful experience to shoot with Photographer Kat Teutsch.

We always like working with the dynamic nature of red at SMH, Inc but red historically is associated with the color of blood, it has also historically been associated with sacrifice, danger and courage. In the USA and Europe red is also the color most commonly associated with heat, activity, passion, sexuality, anger, love and joy. In China, India and many other Asian countries it is the color of symbolizing happiness and good fortune, At the holiday's red berries means celebration and used for decoration.

Many of the berries pictured here are of the bittersweet family,  a semi-woody vine  which scrambles over other plants, the berry is poisonous to humans and livestock, kind of ironic that we associate both the dangerous color red and toxic berries with the Holidays but we love them anyway, even if tempted just don't eat them!

Purple was the color worn by Roman magistrates; it became the imperial color worn by the rulers of the Byzantine Empire and the Holy Roman Empire and later by Roman Catholic bishops. Similarly in Japan, the color is traditionally associated with the Emperor and aristocracy. For us at Studio Marcus Hay it will always be associated with the late and great singer Prince who sadly passed away earlier this year.

When sourcing for this image Marcus tapped into rich velvets, amethyst crystals and feathers. Purple runs the gamut of tones, Anywhere from a rich deep blue purple to a lilac to a red hued burgundy.

We enjoyed shooting this image for Better Homes & Gardens featured in the November issue and shot once again by the lovely Photographer Kat Teutsch

It’s time to take out the “trailer trash” because there are some really amazing new interpretations of the iconic caravan out there, with not a mullet hairdo or plaid in sight! There’s nothing more American than a road trip and the idea of getting out on the road and letting things sort out, Singer and Actor and ex mullet wearing Jon Bon Jovi said it best when he said “Map out your future-but do it in pencil. The road ahead is a long as you make it. Make it worth the trip” A road trip is a metaphor of life itself so why not create your trip in as much style as possible.

In this current age it’s easy for man to feel a lack of connection with nature, we stay huddled in our bubbles and don’t often take the plunge, A trailer is like a portal to breaking this spell. Brian and Jodi Buzarde who own “Woody” (That is featured here) know what’s it’s like to be forced to burst the bubble, They closed in on their 30’s and were eager to settle down but like many of their generation, neither knew where their fledging careers would take them. So they devised a solution that was unorthodox but practical, and they built a house that could go with them no matter where they ended up.

On HGTV, there are many shows devoted to the idea of a small mobile home, One show we find fascinating at SMH, Inc is “Tiny House, Big Living” It really sparks a sense of wanderlust as you view folks custom designing a tiny home on wheels for their needs. In a world where rental markets are through the roof and the idea of a young couple owning a home is slimmer, perhaps this is the new solution?

For us, the most iconic symbol of the trailer is the classic Airstream who still produce an amazing array of trailers, even custom making models for sale with design focused companies such as Design Within Reach. We drool over the website, it really evokes memories of childhood and the dream of one day owning your own shining (less pink) silver Barbie camper. Trailers represent a dream that for some become a reality, We hope we inspire you to hit the road and think big.

We have sourced a lot of these images from Dwell Magazine. Dwell is one of our official online content partners. You can view Curio (Our online mini magazine) and Studio Marcus Hay our on dwell.com also. In this article designed purely for this blog and the Dwell website. We have suggestions of great things to buy for the trailer from some of our favorite retailers, many of whom are clients and whose products we have used in projects that have proved very successful, We hope you enjoy our shopping guide.

We continue the Williams Sonoma Thanksgiving vibe by sharing with you some more of the evocative images that were created for this years Thanksgiving and Fall catalog. Marcus who styled these shots got to work with some amazing Photographers and Food Stylists once again for the iconic brand.

In his usual graphic style Marcus was able to make these sets of carving and steak knives jump off the page by using a series of wooden boards, stone bowls and slate. The rich and inciting world of Thanksgiving continues working with the amazing Food Stylist Alison Attenborough working on a buffet that would make any host proud.

These images were shot by SF native Erin Kunkel and Australian Sharyn Cairns

For the Holidays and CB2, Marcus travelled to Chicago a few months ago to work with the team at The Crate and Barrel Studios. This project was the gift guide that is interwoven into the regular catalog which has just come out for the Holidays, 2016.

We were working with much smaller sets then normal. Marcus has just returned again from Chicago where he was part of the team once again for Spring, 16 where the sets where at maximum capacity and felt more familiar. Marcus has worked on The Gift Guide a few years back and he knows it takes a different mindset as there are a lot more images on each page and it is important that each spread has a consistent flow in terms of it's individual theme.

These are just a few of the spreads of many that were featured, Look out for the next set next month in the larger book. Jonny Valiant shot these wonderful images and Marcus would like to thank his amazing Assistants Veronica and Carrie for helping him make it all happen.
