Marcus was once again invited to Art Direct the Summer Program for Garnet Hill, working for the first time on this brand with favorite Photographer Jonny Valiant.

Marcus and the team embraced the Summer Season with a new linen launched by Garnet Hill who do great linen products in both home and fashion.

Working with light and bright Summery sets, Jonny and Marcus worked hard at creating wonderful summery light with highlights and sun filled rooms, working with sets designed by Marcus with the very clever set builder Matt Carstens.

Both Super star Prop Stylist Carin Scheve and Soft Stylist Eduardo Vinueza worked their amzing magic in creating a mood inspired by the fashion teams trip to Morocco.

Over the last few months, All of Marcus's work for Williams Sonoma has started to appear in the pre and now Summer catalogs in both Prop Styling and Art Direction. Largely Grilling spreads, Marcus got to work with fave Photographers Anna Williams and Romulo Yanes.

While Marcus was Art Directing he got to work with the ever lovely Prop Stylist Suzie Meyers and I'm sure you'll all agree, amazing Food Styling by George Delose

Shooting in San Francisco, It's always fun to shoot Summer spreads knowing that the season will be on it's way, As we all kick back on Memorial Day, We know Summer is finally here, We hope you all had a great long weekend!

Last year in Austin, Texas, Marcus had the pleasure of working with the amazing Crate & Barrel team in Austin Texas, where we spent a couple of weeks shooting the Summer Outdoor catalog in some amazing Austin locations.

It was the first time Marcus has worked on the Art Direction of the Crate and Barrel catalog but has had a long history with the company in other roles and brands so it was very exciting to work with the wonderful Photographer Alec Hemer once again and talented Prop Stylist Joe Maer, of who Marcus has known for many years in New York.

Marcus is looking forward to more Crate and Barrel projects, stay tuned!

Marcus was thrilled to have the opportunity to Art Direct for the Eileen Fisher Home Group for Garnet Hill on the Spring Summer Catalog.

Shot at the Garnet Hills Studios in Exeter, New Hampshire Marcus worked with the talented Set Building team led by Matt Carstens to create mini worlds that felt at home with the beautiful product available for us to shoot including some exciting new color ways and fabrications.

Inspired by the DNA of The Eileen Fisher Company, Marcus channeled influences including a homage to the Adobe homes of the South West and a theme true to Eileen, Japan.

Working with the ever talented Photographer Maura McEvoy, Magical Soft Stylist’s Eduardo Vinueza and Christina Watkinson and the amazing Prop Stylist Carin Scheve, Marcus spent the week creating these elegant and understated shots.

CB2 / Spring Catalog, 2018

What a joy to work on the latest CB2 Catalog in Chicago with Photographer Jonny Valiant once again late last year. Over a few weeks Marcus and his team shot and styled a portion as illustrated above for the latest Spring Catalog working with some exciting new furniture and design pieces which just keep getting better and better each saeson, Congrats to all at CB2 including our amazing AD Jennifer Moore who is always such a pleasure to work with.

Always a bigger then Ben Hur project, we spent almost a whole week just working on designing the sets with the lead set builder Jake, carefully creating authentic sets that resembled South American Social Clubs, Modern Moroccan Villas and West Coast Homes with that Californian vibe all from snowy Chicago, It really is quite amazing the magic that is created.

Williams Sonoma / Latest Catalog's, 2018

It was such a delight for Marcus and his team to have the opportunity to work with Photographer Anders Schonnemann again on Williams Sonoma's Cooks latest catalogs in San Francisco. Shot late last year, these shots are starting to emerge and it's a joy to see them in print.

Marcus's Assistants Aja Coon and Leah Martin both worked hard with me scouring San Francisco plant nurseries for just the perfect trees and botanicals for these series of shots including Meyer Lemons in particular and a cross section of every citrus you could imagine, even finding citrus blossom in the middle of winter.

Marcus's years at Real Simple Magazine have put him in good practice for organizing as he continue's to Style (and Art Direct) such shoots with aprons styled in precise mathematical order and drawer organizers, not to mention the top 7 trash cans available from the home brand.

There comes a certain satisfaction from such precision, something he hopes to roll more into the reality of his own home life ; )

It's always a big season at Williams Sonoma when the Holiday's are concerned and this year Studio Marcus Hay, Inc played a big part in creating some amazing imagery for the December Catalog's. Working with the ever talented Photographers Anson Smart, Anna Williams and Anders Schonnemann.

Marcus largely Art Directed for the season but also Prop Styled in places, always open to be a part of the bigger picture and helping where he can, With amazing teams and having the opportunity to work in one of his favorite cities, San Francisco, he enjoys the challenge of creating fresh and vibrant Photography that enhances the brand's visual identity.

West Elm / Decorating Images / July, 2017

Here at SMH, Inc we have more images to share from our recent project with West Elm. Shot in their new Brooklyn Studio, we converted an empty space into a multi room brownstone complete with high ceilings, prewar moldings and giant window's.

With pre productions meetings in place, Lead Art Director, Michelle Meick and Marcus carefully chose the palette and it was really great to work with so many interesting color options, from a dusty lilac bedroom to an dusty emerald dining room, with a nod to modern Italian design we created the space that looks like it was straight out of a European publication.

On the side Marcus was asked to create moodboards that complemented the rooms using paint chips, fabric swatches and materials from West Elm fused with botanicals and fashion forward props sourced by Marcus and his team. It was a great way to work as Marcus himself uses this method when working on Interior schemes for his clients and to tie in with West Elm's Style and Service Program.

It was a great project to work on and we hope you like seeing more of what was involved.

Marcus got to work once again with the amazing Photographer Paul Raeside on these exciting new pages for West Elm in their brand new studio at Industry City in Brooklyn. Working with a massive set of a townhouse with many rooms, Marcus helped create the look of these sets and choose all the colors for this series of shots and more coming up with a very sophisticated color palette that spoke to a European esthetic.

Wanting to embrace a feeling of Modern Italian, It's a genre that Marcus feels right at home with. Marcus brought to the shoot a lot of his sculptural pieces and art that helped complement the wide range of new accessories, art and furniture available at West Elm.

For the Spring Catalog for Garnet Hill, Marcus ventured up to Exeter, New Hampshire to Garnet Hill's new location to Art Direct. It was great to meet all the new team players and work in their brand new studio.

Marcus oversaw 2 teams, The work above is from his team with talented Photographer, Kate Sears, The ever amazing Stylist's Props: Carin Scheve and Soft Styling: Scot Scharenbroich.

Working with some wonderful new product including a new range by Judy Ross, Marcus and the team embraced just the tiniest bit of Costa Rica where the fashion team shot the fashion portion which is also featured in the Spring Catalog out now.

Pottery Barn/ April Catalog, 2017

In November last year, Marcus travelled back to San Francisco to work with The Pottery Barn Team on their April Catalog.

Recently Pottery Barn has included some exciting Pottery Barn makeovers in their catalogs, giving people the opportunity see their living spaces in a whole new light using Pottery Barn product to makeover one of their living spaces. Marcus was assigned the project of working with a lovely couple Sterling and Cassie on their cottage in Hayward, San Francisco. Sterling and Cassie have two adorable daughters and due having such a busy time with young kids they often don't have a lot of time to decorate. Marcus spent some time working on a plan as seen on the pages above using product available in the current catalog. Repainting the space from a dirty yellow to fresh white and a duck egg blue freshened the place straight away. Marcus also created a gallery of art including photo's of the family selected by marcus and Cassie for the space, It was a big transformation that took many weeks in the planning but everybody was very happy with the end results.

On the same week, Marcus also shot some outdoor shots in an amazing property in Marin and helped create the look for the impending Summer which always comes earlier in California! A fun week had by all, It was great t work with talented Photographer John Merkl and Art Director Yu Me Compton.

CB2/ Spring, 17/ Round 2

It all happens in Chicago!, Marcus worked once again with Photographer Jonny Valiant for CB2 in the Crate & Barrel Studios for the next addition of the Spring, 17 book just out. This is the second Spring addition which features some new spreads.

We continued our take on Modern Italian and Californian inspired stories. Here we have a couple of new bedrooms, Marcus has spent many years working with beds and there's some major tricks that go into making a bed look great, there's always a fine line between lived in and just plain messy, For CB2 we like to style them more on the simpler side. The first bedroom was made to feel like a Fashionista's hotel room and the second a Gentleman's Quarter so a slightly different approach was taken on both to give a point of difference.

Marcus worked with creating the sets with set builder and designer Justin Rowe and Art Director Jennifer Moore working with may marble surfaces and metallic detailing. Thanks to my wonderful Chicago based Assistants Veronica Sullivan and Amanda Wolfson

In Chicago, Marcus worked once again with the ever talented Jonny Valiant for CB2 in the Crate & Barrel Studios for the Spring, 17 book just out.

It was exciting to work with many new products new to the season and seen for the first time. We shot the book in many themes including Modern Italian and Californian inspired stories. Many bedrooms and living rooms but also a coffee shop in the mix that used a very exciting 3D herringbone wall.

Marcus worked with creating the sets with set builder and designer Justin Rowe and Art Director Jennifer Moore working with may marble surfaces and metallic detailing. All finishes were created by Alexis Gourguechon including the marble surfboard that features on some of the spreads, Alexis is a master at the faux finish and very talented. Thanks to my amazing Assistants Veronica Sullivan and Amanda Wolfson

For Spring, 2017, Williams Sonoma Home has embraced a pastel palette and introduced some softer colors to their palette in the way of dusty pinks, aquas and yellows. In the mix are also the classics blues and grays.

Marcus was asked to join the team in San Francisco to style these pages with Photographer Eric Piasecki that Marcus has worked with many times before, It was great to reunite!

We had a lot of decorative pillow spreads to shoot and it was lot's of fun to come up with props that helped tell the story behind each scheme.

CB2/ Holiday's/ 2016

For the Holidays and CB2, Marcus travelled to Chicago a few months ago to work with the team at The Crate and Barrel Studios. This project was the gift guide that is interwoven into the regular catalog which has just come out for the Holidays, 2016.

We were working with much smaller sets then normal. Marcus has just returned again from Chicago where he was part of the team once again for Spring, 16 where the sets where at maximum capacity and felt more familiar. Marcus has worked on The Gift Guide a few years back and he knows it takes a different mindset as there are a lot more images on each page and it is important that each spread has a consistent flow in terms of it's individual theme.

These are just a few of the spreads of many that were featured, Look out for the next set next month in the larger book. Jonny Valiant shot these wonderful images and Marcus would like to thank his amazing Assistants Veronica and Carrie for helping him make it all happen.

A few months ago, Marcus and his team joined Williams Sonoma in New York for the opportunity to style the Fall Open Kitchen section of the catalog. Using just Open Kitchen product mixed in with a lot of pumpkins, gourds and vibrant pink mom’s, Marcus created a world of Friendsgiving in the complex’s café. Quite a large scale space, He needed to create very large floral arrangements and branches to enhance the festive feeling needed.

Havens Kitchen is located in Chelsea/ NYC The Kitchen is a space dedicated to forming communities through the pleasure of cooking and eating. Alison Cayne founded Haven’s Kitchen in 2012 with the goal of advocating for sustainable agricultural systems by teaching people how to cook. Initially a cooking school, the business eventually expanded to include a café, serving fine and approachable food as well as on-site and off-site private event services.

We loved working again with the amazing Photographer John Kernick, Food by the ever so clever George Dolese

CB2/ High Summer Catalog/ 2016

It's the height of Summer and SMH, Inc like everybody else in the northern hemisphere is sweltering in the heat but you can take light relief flipping through your latest CB2 Catalog and a nice cold Chardonnay as Marcus brings it with his latest styling for the Chicago based brand.

Excited to make a new journey, SMH, Inc is traveling once again to the windy city next week for nearly a month to work on Holiday offerings, working once again with the very talented Photographer Jonny Valiant. This series of images are also shot by Jonny.

It's always such fun to work with such modern and sleek designs, CB2 have really been riding a creative wave with lot's of great new finds for the home.

For the latest August catalog for DWR, It was great to see some shots being revisited in their full format as a complete story. Marcus styled these Bantam sofa images for Design Within Reach last year but this is the first time this year that they have been seen all together. What many of you may know already that at SMH, Inc we love to work with a narrative or a back story that adds a layer of personality to a shot. Here after some discussion, we thought it was an opportunity to showcase a fashion forward career minded woman who was daring, sexy and charismatic.

We shot this story in The Hampton’s and spent much time collecting just the right props to help get across the vision we had for the person that may own this room. We like to work this way as it helps us give authenticity to a space and allows the viewer to subconsciously pick up on a theme or mood based on the character being projected. It’s not unlike creating a set for a film or stage, every little detail is so important right down to what coffee table books that person may own or what favorite flowers she may have in her vase.

We hope you can appreciate and register with the character reflected here, It something we aim to do in nearly all our work. These images were shot with the amazing Jim Bastardo that understands this approach more than anyone.

For Williams Sonoma Summer, It’s always nice to shoot it where it’s warmer all year anyhow to get into the spirit of sunshine and happy days, Escaping the dead of winter in NY for the more palatable west coast allowed SMH, Inc to work on some great images for the new catalog featuring a very appetizing cocktail on the cover was a pleasure.

This time we were focused on Styling, Continuing with their melamine collection, we have some more versions of that series profiled here, taking a very graphic approach on a lovely zinc surface. Wedding registries and baking pages galore and a fun lemonade party where we worked with two delightful girls, creating a garden, lemonade stand and wardrobe. Was a lot of fun for American Girl. You can’t see it, but there is some very lovely 10 x 10 feet sod beneath their feet the best quality California has to offer!

These images ended up in the main catalog but also in a mini Gift catalog also.

Was great to work once again with the very talented Photographer's, Anson Smart and Romulo Yanes
